Not the CPD We Need, The CPD We Deserve

By: Michael Kravshik, CPA, CA

Over the past 12 months we’ve spoken to over one thousand CPAs about Continuing Professional Development (CPD), and what we heard is extremely disheartening.

The vast majority of CPAs view their CPD requirement simply as compliance. It’s just another box to check on the To-Do list. Those that value it as something more, as something that truly helps them in their career, tend to be the people whose specialties fall into the traditional CPD buckets like tax and audit.

Everyone agrees professional learning could be a powerful tool for career progression; it just often falls short. The question is, what does great CPD look like?

We spoke to those thousand CPAs to find out what they wanted out of CPD. Here’s a summary of what we heard:

– Valuable: CPAs want knowledge that will help them get better at what they do and push their career forward. This doesn’t just mean tax and IFRS, it also encompasses a broad range of subjects stretching from the conceptual to the practical, and from soft skills to hard.

– Engaging: CPAs are a diverse group, but the one thing they all seem to have in common is an endless curiosity around how real businesses work. But being lectured to gets old, fast. CPAs want to feel connected with what they’re learning; real stories from the people whose experiences can teach more than any textbook. There should be no surprise why so many top business schools rely on the case study method; it’s effective.

– Convenient: CPAs are tired of having to work their life around CPD. Going to in-person sessions, or being tied to a computer for 60+ minutes at a time, sometimes just doesn’t fit into their busy lives. They want CPD to integrate into their life, not disrupt it.

So is it possible for CPD to live up to its potential?

Challenge accepted.

We set out to make CPD something that’s valuable, engaging, convenient, and dare I say… enjoyable.
