Surviving Busy Season Can Be A Challenge

“Busy Season.”

There, I said it. While working for an accounting firm there is no way you can avoid it. It’s that glorious time of year when you start needing to put in 60, 70 and 80 hour weeks just to get the job done. I know, it sounds glamorous! And unfortunately for most of us, we are in the thick of it now.

Lucky for those in public accounting firms it is exactly that – a season. As in not permanent. Busy season for auditors typically tends to be from January to March and sometimes can trickle to the middle of April.

Not to worry, I am going to give you 5 simple tips on how to survive busy season and come out fresh as a daisy on the other side. These 5 things definitely helped me to keep my sanity during busy season.

1. Give Yourself Small Achievable Goals

Small goals really help to break the day up and make the time go by faster. I would set goals for myself like “Fix all of the formatting issues in the workbook” or “Roll forward all the PY documents.”

2. Listen to Good Music (when you can)

I’ve said this before and I will say it again, good music can get me through just about anything.

With all the music platforms out there you can find any kind of playlist from 30 mins to 30 hours! The key recommendation is to listen to music without lyrics, or it will distract you and do more harm than good.

3. Eat Good Food

This one is very easy to overlook since it is so easy to just grab a burger or pick up a pizza.

But, eating carb heavy meals will slow you down and knock you out part way through your day. Keep it light and breezy with different kinds of fruits (simple sugars), salads and meats to keep you going. My personal favourite is a big chicken salad with spinach, lettuce, and bell peppers.

4. Unwind Every Day

Make sure to take a little time for you at the end of the day to reset yourself to zero.

Personally, I like to read, drum, workout, or train karate – you need to find what works for you and fit it into your routine.

5. Remember It’s Temporary

I cannot stress this enough. It may seem like it is insurmountable at the time, but it will pass.

I kept myself going by taking it a week at a time, and before you know it 12 weeks have gone by and you have another busy season under your belt.
